Animal Accents was developed from an idea that was borne years ahead of its time after my husband started an animal giftware business in New Jersey in 1991. In order to keep his business differentiated and product lines unique, we would travel extensively to trade shows to find commercial lines, and craft shows for especially unique ones. Sometimes we would walk large gift trade shows for miles just to find that needle in a haystack.
At the time pet industry trade shows were not viable to find such items, as they catered more to full-line pet stores and groomers. (pre-Petco and Petsmart). We were interested primarily in giftware, not leashes, collars and pet food. Interestingly, there were a growing number of other small businesses like ours that were in the same boat. It was then we had the vision to develop this niche and become a one-stop shopping for the animal giftware boutiques.
Our reputation for delivering unique, distinctive, and quality products with first-rate customer service is unparalleled in this industry. Many manufactures desire to work with us because of the product ideas we have developed that have become successful for them. For many small manufacturers and crafters we represent, we are their only sales rep, so dealing with us will be the only way to get involved in some of the industry’s freshest and most exciting new products. Our product and business knowledge is a result of owning retail businesses in this industry for years. We know our breeds. How many sales reps can tell the difference between a Miniature Pinscher and Manchester terrier? A Smooth Fox or Rat Terrier? How many sales reps that you know even know what these breeds are? How can you expect these people to help you in your business if they lack the basic understanding of what you deal with everyday?
We listen. But we also ask the right questions. We understand that not all businesses in this genre are the same. There is no cookie-cutter recipe for success that applies to all retailers. Who is your target market? Are your customers high-end, or more moderate? Are you in a high-traffic area, resort town, mall location, Main Street, etc? How many square feet will you devote to this category? What is your budget? How committed are you to see it being successful?
We understand your concerns because we have an extensive history in retail. We have been there ourselves. We understand your needs for price, terms, inventory control, product turns, displays, etc., etc., etc. Many times we can bridge the gap between you and the manufacturer to trouble-shoot your concerns and proactively work on solutions before they become problems.
Our forte is, however, finding the right product mix for your store. Our retail experience will also enable us to offer you some ideas on store design.
